Olympics bet against climate change with swimming in Seine and may lose. Scientists say told you so

  • by

The Paris Olympics bet against climate change when they scheduled some outdoor swimming events in the Seine River, and they may lose. Heavy rains — something that’s increased with human-caused climate change, especially in Europe — are threatening to wash out the swimming portion of triathlon events. If they do, it will defeat a Parisian environmental facelift that had been aimed at ensuring the Seine would be clean enough to swim in. The river has been too full of waste, including fecal matter, because of urban runoff from those heavy rains. Some scientists say organizers didn’t take climate change and its heavier rains properly into account when they laid plans. And it’s happening in a city where a crucial climate agreement was forged.
